Raku firing provides instant gratification for the artist! Glazed ceramic pieces are taken out of the raku kiln, glowing red at around 1850 degrees Fahrenheit. These pieces are immediately placed in a combustible material inside a steel can to produce flashing, crackle effects and rainbow metallic finishes. Each firing takes about 30 minutes or so. The ceramic piece is usually cooled within an hour, showing the highly variable effect. Students will learn glazing methods, safety procedures, and firing techniques. Glaze results can be highly variable and exciting! Students must have bisque-fired work ready to fire and can fire up to 3 pieces during the session, depending on size. This will be a potluck event to fuel our fun with fire! Please bring a dish to pass to celebrate the fun and enjoy the company of other artists.
