Rick will take you out to the Yampa Valley’s most iconic scenery and share his 30+ years of experience and reveal insights and techniques learned throughout his career. The workshop will cover the entire creative process, including tips and instruction on location, perspective, composition, shooting, editing and post-production work. You will learn to add a digital art finish that fuses color and texture to further enhance the visual impact. The synergy created by this fusion of reality and imagination makes each image timeless. A 30-day trial of Lightroom CC will need to be downloaded before attending class.

There are very few arts as iconic of the early settler days as spinning dying and weaving wool. Lorrae Moon and her crew at Yampa Valley Fiberworks are ranchers at heart and millers by trade. For 20 years her family has been a part of the natural fiber industry with a deep understanding of the work, dedication and love required to be a rancher. you’ll work with Yampa Valley Fiberworks’ fiber, which is the result of a year’s worth of love and care for the herd.
Join us to find out the basics of the spinning wheel; how to work with different fibers; and finally the art of spinning. Materials supplied.

Woodworking with Beetle-Kill Timber

Dennis Lodwick, owner and operator of Unique Picnic Tables, is dedicated not only to the art of woodworking, but also to the use of beetle-kill wood in his uniquely crafted furniture. Join Dennis to learn about the unique properties of working with beetle-kill timber and woodworking techniques to make your own lazy-susan. Practice the techniques you learn in a group project of building a beetle-kill bench, with the beautiful blue stained coloring of the wood, produced by the fungus carried in by the beetle when it lays its eggs. Materials supplied.
The pine beetle epidemic has killed almost 95 % of the Lodge Pole Pine forest in Colorado alone. Taking a natural disaster and turning it into a positive is one of the goals of Dennis’ Unique Picnic Tables company. With the vast quantities of timber available, they use this “Blue Stained” material in building fine outdoor furniture as well other unique items.

Use our tools and leather material to crimp, punch, dub, brand and stamp. The doors will be open for anyone to walk in (as space permits) during this open-house-style leathercrafting workshop. Different stations will be set-up for experimenting with this classic western material. There will be prototypes and instructions to make and take-away a pouch, wallet, bracelet, mason jar holder, head-phone cord wrangler, and valet tray. Materials supplied.

NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE AND DANCE

Steeped in the history and evolution of dance in Steamboat Springs, Kent is the former President and Artistic Director of Steamboat Dance Theatre and a member of the Ute Indian Tribe. Join Kent for an afternoon exploring the rich history of Native American dance and how it has informed modern dance. Learn about the Ute Indian history of this area through storytelling, making dance sticks and gourd sticks and trying out traditional steps of thanks giving. Kent will guide participants through simple warm-up exercises and dance steps of Gourd Dancing, Sneak Up, and Round Dance. All abilities are welcome and no dance experience is necessary. Candle making was an essential in historic Steamboat days! Explore different methods of creating candles with instructor Candice Jones. Choose your colors for poured wax in cut wine bottles; practice the meditative and ancient-technique of hand dipping; and learn honeycomb candle rolling.
